Our First Year!
We’re celebrating one incredible year since opening our doors at Cache Valley Pottery Studio — and what a journey it’s been! This space was born out of a desire for community, for connection through clay, and for a place where creativity could thrive. In just one year, we’ve seen the studio grow beyond anything we imagined — from adding new kilns and expanding our programs, to welcoming passionate members and talented teachers who have helped shape this space into something truly special. What started as a dream has quickly become a vibrant, ever-growing community built on collaboration, creativity, and support. We’re beyond grateful to every single person who’s walked through our doors and contributed their time, energy, and love to this studio. Here’s to even more clay-covered hands, beautiful pieces, and shared joy in the years to come!
Sterling Brown: Studio Owner
Sterling Brown has been passionate about pottery for over 25 years, ever since he crafted his first pot in 1998 at Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, UT. From that moment, working with clay became more than just a hobby—it turned into a lifelong pursuit. Over the years, he has honed his skills, developing a signature style that emphasizes large, multi-part vases and consistently refined forms. His dream has always been to create a studio where others can experience the joy of working with clay firsthand. Through his craftsmanship and dedication, Sterling continues to inspire others while pushing the boundaries of his own artistic expression.
Jeff Oliver: Studio Manager
Jeff Oliver has been pursuing his passion for ceramics for over 17 years, dedicating himself to both the technical and artistic aspects of the craft. Through formal education and years of hands-on experience in his solo studio practice, he has developed a deep and diverse knowledge of handbuilding and throwing techniques. Jeff specializes in creating altered thrown vessels, skillfully incorporating multi-media organic handbuilding elements to enhance their form. His work is further distinguished by abstract decoration, adding depth, texture, and a unique artistic voice to each piece. With a constant drive to refine his techniques and push creative boundaries, Jeff continues to evolve as an artist, sharing his passion for ceramics with others.
John Westenskow: Senior Instructor
John Westenskow taught art and ceramics for 36 years and received the Utah Art Educator Association’s 2017-2018 Middle/Junior School High Teacher of the Year Award. John was also honored to be included in the 2022 edition of the Dictionary of Utah Fine Artists along with notable Utah artists past and present. He loves being up to his elbows in clay and sharing that joy with others. He enjoys the tactile and expressive qualities of clay and the way it can magically transform from a lump into a beautiful sculptural or functional piece of art.
